10 Oct 2009 Local Band Rocks Kings Arms

ARH20091010-33957 (Large)The Heidi McLaughlin band has featured on our pages before, for good reason – they are a rockin’ good band to enjoy whenever and wherever they are in town.

Tonight, they were playing at the King’s Arms pub to a full house.  It was a tight squeeze in more ways than one.  They belted out their homegrown music and songs as well as classic rock and blues.

Spare a thought, though, for the lead singer who had to take swigs of cough syrup every three songs, and dodge more…

Artists and the public enjoy the art on show

Artists and the public enjoy the art at the show.

The second Off the Walls art show, which is supported by Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, and held last Saturday at the Gill Nethercott Centre, was first-rate: there were numerous local artists displaying their talented artistic skills for use with our “Off the Walls” project.

It was also a time to celebrate and share our first birthday with our members and the public, including the Mayor of Whitchurch and various representatives of local community groups and government. more…

Members and guest socialise at the AGM in the White Hart

Our annual general meeting was held on 22 September 2009 starting at 7pm in the White Hart in Whitchurch, Hampshire, UK.

Twenty-three people attended in all, and enjoyed a social start to the evening while enjoying a delicious platter of ham, cheeses and other finger foods (to say nothing of some real ales and (real) wines from the bar).

Thank you to all who attended this public meeting, in celebration of our first year, and to get stuck into the formal matters of the AGM.  And, a special thank you to Andy at the White Hart for letting us take over his dining room, and for his scrumptious food.

These scribbles are the minutes for our AGM. more…

Children prepare to launch their decorated sky lanterns at the Whitchurch Arts "Bedtime Earth Hour" event.

A large crowd of local residents, young and old, came to the Whitchurch Arts Earth Hour events on Saturday at the Gill Nethercott Centre. The hall was decorated with artwork made by the children of Whitchurch.

Children and their parents were treated to a wonderful puppet show at the 6pm “Bedtime Earth Hour” event.

At 6:30pm, it was time for lights out in celebration of Earth Hour (a bit early, but just right for the kiddies that had to head off to bed).

The stage was set for a funny puppet show. The "60", decorated by Oak Tree Nursery, refers to the 60 minutes in Earth Hour.

The stage was set for a funny puppet show. The "60", decorated by kids at Oak Tree Nursery, refers to the 60 minutes in Earth Hour.

A wild animal puppet show, accompanied by music performed by Gillian Anderson, thrilled the kids and their parents.  It was put on a trio of performers with next to no experience; Paula Stead and Katya & Andrew Reeves-Hall.

Afterward, families decorated their sky lanterns by the light of the setting sun ~ many with pictures and wishes for a greener Earth future.  They lit, launched and watched in awe and amazement as their sky lanterns took  to the skies above Whitchurch.  At one point, a line of six or seven were visible making their way, high in the sky, south towards Winchester; just one decided to perch itself in a nearby tree!

The first lantern to take flight was one decorated by the children at the Oak Tree Nursery.  Lanterns decorated by Rising Fives Pre-School and Whitchurch Primary School also took flight during the course of the evening events. Pupils from Testbourne decorated and launched a lantern at the later event. (Watch a video of our earlier test launch).
