29 Jun 2009 The Copse ~ A Poem

Two pupils of Whitchurch primary school had their works published recently in the school’s newsletter.  Their families are pleased to share them with you. One is here, and the other is on the Whitchurch Meadow site.  Enjoy.

The Copse

The trees cry
Whimpering in the rain
Like a waterfall tipping down
The trees all in pain

The copse chatters
No longer lonely
Like a bunch of elephants
Whispering silently

The trees whistle
The cold wind zooming by
Like a quick racing car
This is no lie

The copse looks down
Staring at me
Like the kings of the copse
All the tall trees

A nifty idea for a poetry challenge that serves a purpose: How to change a plug… in verse.

Have a look around your home or business now to find something that lists a bunch of steps (e.g. assembly instructions) or rules.  Then write a poem of your own on that topic, to liven it up!

The BBC reported today on a new book which our members might find inspirational and fun:

Eunoia is the shortest word in English containing all five vowels – and it means “beautiful thinking”. It is also the title of Canadian poet Christian Bok’s book of fiction in which each chapter uses only one vowel.

Take your words to the library!

Take your words to the library!

Walk around Kingsclere, Overton or Whitchurch and see if you’ve been inspired to write poetry!

Words ‘n Walks’ is a competition to find poems inspired by local walks. Winning entries will be chosen by Alison Orlowska, Hampshire Poet for the National Year of Reading, and will be displayed on fingerposts along the walks.

It’s open to all ages and it’s fun, so find out more from Kingsclere, Whitchurch and Overton Libraries. But hurry – the competition closes at the end of September.

Words ‘n Walks’ is organised by Hampshire County Council Libraries and Countryside Services.

The Whitchurch Library website is now online.
