30 Jul 2010 Celebration of Official Launch of Bollards Project

Speech given by Graham Burgess at the official launch party for the Whitchurch Bollards project.

With 8 bollards already painted (some are just ‘test’ ones but even they sure look good!), the Whitchurch Bollards project is off to a colourful start!

The manager of the project, John Buckley, is a founding member of Whitchurch Arts. Steve Miller, an artist from Whitchurch Arts has been hired to carry out the painting work of some of the bollards.

On the occassion of the official launch of the project last evening at the White Hart, who are the first sponsors of two bollards, our Director of Arts Graham Burgess made a short congratulatory speech which included some background to bollards in general. The whole of his statement is in the attached document.

Congratulations to John and indeed the community of Whitchurch for a fantastic and creative start to the project. A full report on the launch is on the town’s official website HERE.

Updated! The White Hart is already a place to see the ‘Off the Walls‘ art, some painted bollards, and on Father’s Day 2010, it was the place to create some art ‘On the Ground’!

Many local kids took up the challenge to create some art in the car park – who knew Whitchurch had so many Pavement Picassos?!

Members of Whitchurch Arts judged the drawings. Top prize of a Sunday Carvery for 4 went to Bella for her drawing. Everyone else was a winner, too – all took home fantastic 2nd place prizes, donated by Andy and Julie of the White Hart.

Congratulations!

12 Mar 2010 Energetic Green Fun
March 20, 2010toMarch 27, 2010

Calling all families who want to save the planet and be creative doing it.

The first ever ‘Whitchurch Green Aware‘ week is to take place in town between the 20th and 27th of March, and Whitchurch Arts is proud to be involved.

Firstly, be quick! Enter the photo competition which we’ll be judging!  Deadline is the 15th of March.  Complete rules and details are HERE.  Prizes will be awarded during our Earth Hour event…

Start the week with the ‘Tree Mend Us Trashy Tree’ project on Saturday 20th March at the Green Aware Fair; come along to the Gill Nethercott Centre make decorations for the Trashy Tree using recycleable materials.

The next day, Sunday 21st, come and help to build the Trashy Tree on the Millennium Meadow starting at 1pm.  You’ll explore what is recyclable rubbish, and what isn’t.  Bring your clean rubbish with you and you will see.  You are invited to help build the tree and make more decorations to add to the tree. Come to the Millenium Green from 1pm onwards.

The following weekend, ‘Green’ and ‘Energy’ is the theme for the Whitchurch Arts ‘Off the Walls’ exhibition on Sunday 27th March taking place between 10.30 and 4.30.  Local talented artists will have their work on display.  Find a work of art you like, and create your own piece to interpret it — either as a copy, or your own idea inspired by one of the pieces. Your art work will then be displayed alongside the other artists.  Be sure to bring your parents along, too.

Later that evening, Whitchurch Arts celebrates Earth Hour with a procession that starts from the Town Hall at 7.30pm.  Bring a decorated jar, that has a candle inside, hung from a stick.  We’ll all walk down to the Gill Nethercott Centre for the start of the fun at 8pm, where music and a supper will be offered up.  An environmental quiz will test your knowledge – prizes will be awarded that evening.  At 8:30pm we’ll join the world in turning off the lights for Earth Hour.  Our Carnival Queen will lead those festivities.  Admission just £6 which includes the supper and quiz.

Complete details of week’s events are on the Whitchurch Green Aware website.
