candlesNew to Whitchurch is Earth Day (update: the morning/afternoon “day” events have been cancelled by its organizer) and we are pleased to team up closely with local resident Bethany Wright in respect of just one aspect, namely Earth Hour.

Whitchurch Arts is hosting a celebration of Earth Hour on March 28, 2009 at the Gill Nethercott Centre starting at 6pm for young ones (“Bedtime Earth Hour”), and 8pm for the older ones.

There will be several other events around town (see www.WhitchurchEarthHour.org.uk) leading up to “lights out” at 8:30pm when Whitchurch joins the world in Earth Hour.

Please take the time to learn about all the global initiatives around Earth Hour – things you can do, things schools can do, and things businesses can do.  Also check out the creative communication at Do The Green Thing.

EH_A2_Template_FINAL.inddAs for what we will do: we will be having a two launches of “sky lanterns” to top off the celebration ~ numerous eco-friendly, candle-powered balloons will take to the skies above Whitchurch. (Did you see a lantern already? We have been conducting research and field tests). The sky lanterns are big enough to paint on before they are launched.

Update: see our special page about this event!

You are invited to come along and, on your own or with your family, enjoy some delicious food and decorate your lantern.  You can write a promise to send up into the heavens. If instead, you want to launch a lantern in your own garden (9pm), then please do so! To place an order for a sky lantern for £3 and to pre-order your ticket (£5, includes sky lantern) to our evening event, then ring Graham on 0125689 2837.

Entertainment, snacks and refreshments will be on offer throughout the evening event.

See our full schedule under “local events” on the WhitchurchEarthHour.org.uk website.

If you cannot join us, then please consider having you own candle-lit evening, or house party, or join in one of the several other events going on around town in support of making Whitchurch the greenest small town in the country!

Whitchurch Arts, a non-profit organisation, supports any expression of community interest that is done in a creative and fun way. You are invited to use Whitchurch Arts to make personal contacts or to join in with our team and members.

  1. [...] now building up for an eco-show to tie in with EarthHour.  More on that on Whitchurch Arts and on Whitchurch Earth Hour. Related [...]

  2. As the Earth Day events are being planned by myself I am sorry to say that there is no connection between the Art’s Group and the planned Earth Day events. The Art’s Group is nothing to do with the Earth Day nor the Earth Day Community Project, as claimed. The Arts are running a separate “Art’s event” in relation to Earth Hour. Please note they are not putting any monies raised on the evening back into Green Initiatives for Whitchurch, just bumping up the Art’s Group bank balance whilst claiming to be working with Earth Day and the project that I am setting up for Whitchurch

  3. There is a connection between various things that may happen on Earth Day and that is a sensitivity in a particular topic area, namely sustainibility.No-one has sole rights to make contact with these dynamics. The Oil Barons may disagree of course and they have some responsibilty. The Earth Hour celebration supported by Whitchurch Arts I hope will not be the only location for support. Our event is as separate as the fingers of a hand and we are very careful to be open and honest so the way we are pointing with our finger will help people grasp the wider objectives. We have a strategic agenda established before these current acivities and any statements about our financial objectives should be carefully considered. We make no profit and if our input exceeds our output due to the free time and effort put in by participants we will decide on where best to spend it for common good.
